Pushing the Creative Boundaries of Resin Flooring

Stephen Nachmanovitch said that, “Creative work is play. It is free speculation using materials of one’s chosen form.”

At Flowcrete our chosen form for creativity is, unsurprisingly, resin flooring. But you’d be very surprised at just how creative you can be with this medium, as new product innovations have combined the seamless, smooth and durable nature of resin solutions with a variety of decorative options.

The seamless terrazzo system Mondéco offers an unlimited scope for creativity. Any design imaginable can be crafted, including intricate outlines, waves of colour, abstract patterns, swirling shapes and corporate logos – all laid out in shining multicoloured art beneath your feet. It’s not just the design that can be bespoke, but even the floor’s colour and its shimmering lustre can be creatively adapted with different decorative aggregates.

Few people understand the importance of creating the right look more than fashion houses, and Mondéco designs have been installed by some of the biggest names in the business.

The floor for Emilio Pucci’s Shanghai store was designed to reflect their eccentric and vibrantly coloured geometric prints with an intricate flooring pattern of angular shapes in a contrasting palette of dove grey and magnolia.

Alexander McQueen’s Beijing boutique utilised the creative possibilities of Mondéco in an entirely different way. Instead of having a pattern on the floor, the store opted for a uniform finish but used its seamless nature and the expertise of Flowcrete to create curved staircases and a unique ‘floating’ display table top.

In the fantastical theme park world of Disneyland Hong Kong the systems Mondéco Crystal and Mondéco Exotic were used to create an enchanting effect. Six different colours were laid out in a special design around a romantic statue, beautifully encapsulating the spirit of Disney. The floor has to maintain this vibrant colour and clear pattern in the face of the park’s 34,000 annual visitors.

A new innovation in the world of artistic resin floors is the Expressions range, which has been designed to produce mesmerising swirls of colour in completely unique patterns. By using a specialist installation technique, different colour tones are mixed together to create a multi-dimensional marbling effect that can never be fully recreated.

The hard-wearing properties of resin flooring means that it can be utilised in a wide range of commercial environments, from the sumptuous shop fronts of high-end retail to hospitals, airports, colleges and other public spaces subject to heavy and continuous traffic.

Even car park floors, which need to cope with constant movement from heavy vehicles as well as corrosive oils and greases, can be given a visual boost with a resin floor.

The Dubai Mall, which boasts the most expansive car park in the Middle East and North Africa region, needed to refurbish its facility with a solution that would provide a smooth, easy to maintain surface with brightly coloured signage. To achieve this over half a million square metres of Deckshield was installed whilst the mall was still operational, ensuring a level and attractive finish across the 14,000 space car park.

As Rita Mae Brown said “Creativity comes from trust. Trust your instincts. And never hope more than you work”, and at Flowcrete we work hard to make sure that you can trust our floors to be functional, reliable and, crucially, creative.
