Super Floor for Secunda’s New SuperSpar

When Spar built a new store in the town of Secunda, it wanted the floor to not only provide a functional surface but also to wow customers with bright visuals and decorative patterns.

To create this bespoke finish, Spar worked with Flowcrete South Africa to design and install a multi-coloured, attractive finish across the main shopping area, kitchen and butchers of the SuperSpar site as well as throughout the adjoining Tops Spar liquor store.

The seamless resin terrazzo system Mondéco Earth was chosen over an epoxy alternative, as it would provide the design, cleanability, functionality and longevity properties required.

2,800m2 of Mondéco Earth was supplied for the project in a variety of complementary colours, including Snow, Pebble, Moonstone, Sea Green, Spring Green and Coral. The colours and patterns reflected specific parts of the store, for example a lush green was used for the flower stand and the sushi bar’s seating area was bordered with a rich red band.

Granite and flint additives were added to the resin terrazzo material within the SuperSpar and Tops Spar floors. The floor area was then diamond ground down to create a shimmering, dappled lustre across the finish.

A vibrant white surface was applied in the SuperSpar’s main shopping area with curving shapes in red, blue, green, cream and turquoise interspersed across the floor. A decorative, single-tone Mondéco Earth Snow surface was applied in the adjacent Tops Spar liquor store.

As a well-known brand it was important that each interior design element of the store conveyed Spar’s identity. The crisp and clear visual style of Mondéco Earth fulfilled this criterion and meant that Spar could create a finish that would effectively tie into its overarching image.

The seamless and impervious nature of seamless resin terrazzo means that it is quick and easy to clean. The system’s durability means that it won’t deteriorate when faced with heavy foot traffic, point loading, impacts, scuffs, scrapes and stains.
