Meeting the Diverse Demands of Hospital Floors

Hospitals can be vast and complex sites that require a lot of specialist knowledge and products to operate effectively.

This includes the hospital floor, as it could have to face anything from regular traffic and hot water washes to highly corrosive chemicals, whilst at all times being hygienic and highly functional. Some healthcare facilities may even require their floors to provide added benefits such as underfloor heating, bright signage or acoustic insulation.

Flowcrete has worked with many hospitals to help them ensure that they have the right floors for the task at hand.

A key benefit of our solutions for hospitals is the highly durable nature of resin flooring and how that helps to keep an environment clean. By ensuring a smooth, seamless finish resin floors are easy to maintain, whereas cracked or split floors can quickly become sites of harmful bacteria build up.

The compatibility of our floors for hospitals was highlighted recently when we won a FeRFA award for the installation of 4,000m² of Peran STB in Southmead Hospital’s new state-of-the-art facility. The Bristol based hospital needed a floor that could be rapidly installed and provide a hygienic, decorative and hard-wearing surface for operating theatres, kitchens, corridors and side rooms.

Hygiene is obviously a key concern for medical buildings and Flowfresh has been formulated to help deliver the highest standards of cleanliness. It provides a hard-wearing, seamless surface that minimises bacteria build up and includes an antimicrobial agent that kills 99% of bacteria on the floor’s surface.

The Park Ten Surgical Centre in Houston installed a specially manufactured Flowfresh solution when they discovered a moisture problem in their original vinyl tile floor. The centre’s hallways and surgery rooms were refurbished with the innovative flooring solution to ensure that it maintained the highest levels of cleanliness.

Many hospitals have integrated additional components into their floors so that it can provide them with extra, highly useful benefits.

For example our Isowarm underfloor heating system enabled the Wester Hailes Healthy Living Centre in Edinburgh to save space and money. This creative heating solution provides efficiency savings of up to 30% and allows building operators to deliver targeted, controllable heating. The construction time of the new-build facility was also reduced through the use of Isocrete K-Screed, which can be installed much quicker than alternative solutions.

More specialised hospitals often need specialist floors able to withstand the specific conditions of the department. The Fu Wai hospital in Beijing is a world leading facility for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, and as part of the site they have a liquid nitrogen library – however most floors would quickly fail if the extremely low temperature liquid nitrogen splashed onto the floor.

Flowshield SL with a top coat of Flowseal UV was installed to meet the demands of the room as this system reliably ensures a level, anti-slip and chemically resilient platform even in this environment.

Flowcrete’s wide range of resin products, combined with our ability to innovate and tailor solutions to individual projects, has made us the ideal partner for hospitals that need a floor provider who can work with them to ensure that the end result perfectly matches their complex requirements.
