flowcrete Americas has played a starring role at one of Canada’s most popular entertainment venues, the Encana Events Centre in Dawson Creek, B.C.

The Encana Events Centre is a state-of-the-art, multi-events facility with 4,500 permanent seats and 27 VIP Luxury Suites, comfortably making it the premier entertainment arena for the entire British Columbia and Alberta Peace Region.

Formerly home to the Dawson Creek Rage ice hockey team, the centre opened in Spring 2008 as part of the South Peace Community Multiplex, and has gone on to have a significant impact on the community and surrounding Peace Region, putting the small city of Dawson Creek on the nation’s map for sporting events and live entertainment.

The summer months provided an opportunity to resurface the centre’s concourse after six years in operation. This work needed to be undertaken as further delay to resurfacing carried the risk of cleaning fluids and spilled drinks penetrating the re-bar and causing corrosion.

Flowcrete and its STAR rated contractor had to face various challenges throughout the refurbishment project, largely as a result of insufficient control joints and shrinkage cracks in the existing slab.

A semi-flexible hybrid flooring system was custom designed for the project to compensate for any flexing movements in the suspended slab. Combining Flowcrete Americas’ decorative, self-level and fast-cure Flowfast Flakes system, installed at 1/8”, with a semi-flexible MMA body coat and semi-flexible top coat from the Deckshield Rapide product line, the new system has performed incredibly well to date with not one single crack telegraphing through.

A methyl methacrylate (MMA) system, Flowfast Flakes cures just 60 minutes following application and is ideally suited to renovation or resurfacing projects on account of its ability to minimize downtime within live trading spaces.
