Contemporary Flooring for History Museum

If you’ve read our previous post on 3 Ways to Use Resin Flooring in Museums, you’ll know that durable resin flooring systems are ideally suited to leisure environments where there is likely to be high levels of footfall.

As well as being durable enough to withstand high levels of traffic without cracking or failing, resin flooring systems also help to protect the substrate from heavy loads and movement of weighty exhibitions.

Choosing the correct flooring solution for new developments can be tough enough, but choosing flooring for large scale refurbishment projects presents even more of challenge! Where one flooring system has failed, or ceased to perform as it should, the next flooring solution needs to live up to expectations.

One such museum that accomplished this very well is St Fagans National Museum of History in the UK.

Based in Cardiff, this museum was named the Museum of the Year at a prestigious awards ceremony, beating the newly built V&A Dundee, as well as the First World War cruiser HMS Caroline in Belfast and Nottingham Contemporary.

In 2017, St Fagans museum underwent a £30 million refurbishment to bring a fresh, modern look to the popular heritage attraction from the ground up.

White lines, contemporary grey flooring and quirky furniture created a fresh, modern look

Aside from the clean white lines, abundance of light reflecting glass and quirky furniture, the museum also chose a deluxe flooring solution to inject new life and vibrancy into its main building.

The terrazzo solution, chosen in sleek, contemporary grey utilises a blend of recycled crushed clear, coloured and mirror glass with metallic particles also included. This hint of sparkle creates a glamorous and ultra modern finish underfoot, contrasting with, but perfectly framing the historical contents of the museum.

The seamless nature of this flooring solution also meant that the flooring could be quickly and easily cleaned, ensuring a spotless and welcoming environment for each visitor.

This popular heritage attraction includes more than 40 historical buildings, ranging from a Tudor merchant’s house to a Victorian country school, all set within 100 acres of parkland.

Judges of the prestigious award called the museum a “magical” place, and we can see why!

As well as winning ‘Museum of the Year”, St Fagans also won the ‘Large Commercial Project of the Year‘ Award at the FeRFA 2017 Awards ceremony.
